When cockroaches invade your home, they endanger your entire family's health. These little brown creatures contaminate everything they touch. They carry disease, causing organisms on their legs and bodies. As they walk on your food, kitchen counters, or kitchen utensils, your family members can get infected with all kinds of gastrointestinal illness such as dysentery and diarrhea or food poisoning.
Cockroaches can also trigger asthma, skin rashes, and allergic reactions, especially in children. When a cockroach newborn or nymph sheds it's skin, bits of the exoskeletons plus bits of cockroach feces get spread around your house. Unknowingly, your family inhales these antigens, which can cause an
allergic reaction
which can be life-threatening.
There are 3,500 species of cockroaches in the world. Only 55 species exist in the United States. Five species of cockroaches can are found in the Downers Grove area.

German Cockroach
has wings but doesn't fly. These insects are easy to identify with their two black stripes running the length of their back. They have lived amongst humans for centuries, and they are not afraid to live within close proximity to people. In fact, like humans, they choose areas near food and water sources.
German Cockroaches
reproduce quickly, every thirty to thirty-five days. Females lay an egg sac which can contain as many as thirty to fifty eggs. These females are prolific, producing up to 300,000 roaches a year. Eggs hatch into white nymphs. After birth, they turn a brownish color. The larvae molt several times before becoming adults. Some cockroaches live as long as two years.
German Cockroaches secrete a
characteristic odor
that is noticeable in homes or apartment buildings where infestations occur. Not only do they carry diseases, but also viruses and protozoa, too. Most of the cases of gastroenteritis are attributed to the German cockroach.
